A Delicious Way to Explore the Southern Forests. There’s something special about discovering Pemberton slowly, winding through towering karri forests, stopping at little local businesses, meeting producers and uncovering places you might otherwise drive straight past.

That’s exactly what you get with a Secret Picnic Adventure in Pemberton.

Rather than simply being handed a picnic basket and told where to go, the Pemberton experience turns your day into a self-guided treasure hunt. You follow digital clues, explore the town and surrounding countryside, collect delicious local treats and eventually discover your secret picnic destination.

So, what exactly is a Secret Picnic?

Think of it as part sightseeing tour, part food trail and part mystery adventure.

After booking, you receive the details for your starting point. Your adventure begins with your first clue, which leads you to your next stop. From there, each clue helps you work out where to go next and what delicious local ingredient you’ll collect along the way.

Your picnic basket gradually fills with a selection of local goodies, including savoury and sweet treats and drinks. Along the route, you’ll also discover interesting local information and places worth exploring.

And the best part?

You don’t know exactly where you’re going until you solve the clues.

That element of surprise makes it a lovely experience for couples, friends, families and visitors who want to do something a little different from the usual sightseeing itinerary.

Exploring Pemberton along the way

Pemberton is the perfect setting for this kind of adventure.

Surrounded by magnificent karri forests and beautiful South West scenery, the area has plenty of character. The Secret Picnic route combines walking around town with driving into the surrounding area, giving you an opportunity to experience more than just the main street.

The Pemberton adventure covers approximately 30- 40 kilometres, depending on which picnic location you choose at the end, and generally takes around 1.5 to 3 hours.

A picnic with a difference

By the time you reach the final destination, your basket will be packed with the ingredients you’ve collected throughout your adventure.

Then comes the reveal: you’ll be directed to your secret picnic location, where you can sit back, relax and enjoy your local feast.

It’s a wonderfully simple idea, but it changes the way you experience a destination. Instead of simply visiting Pemberton’s attractions, you’re actively exploring the region and discovering local food along the way.

The experience also supports local producers, cafés, food businesses and retailers, helping visitors connect with the people and businesses that make the region special.

What do you need?

You don’t need to be an expert treasure hunter!

You’ll need:

  • A smartphone
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes
  • A car for the driving sections
  • A sense of adventure
  • An appetite for some delicious local produce!

We recommend starting around 10.30am or 11am, giving you plenty of time to follow the clues and collect your picnic before lunch.

And if you’re travelling with your four-legged friend, some routes are dog-friendly, although this varies between locations.

Why Pemberton is such a great place for a Secret Picnic

Pemberton isn’t somewhere you want to rush through.

It’s a destination for slowing down, getting amongst the forest and enjoying the journey – which makes the Secret Picnic concept particularly well suited to the region.

And after spending the morning solving clues and collecting your lunch, sitting down somewhere beautiful to enjoy everything you’ve discovered feels like the perfect reward.
