Bunuru in Pemberton: A Time for Vintage, Feijoas, and Fresh Coastal Flavours

PembertonBy Pemberton | 2/9/2024

As the Noongar season of Bunuru arrives in Pemberton, the hottest days of the year settle in, and the land bursts into life with the start of the vintage season and the ripening of feijoas. Known as the “Second Summer”, Bunuru is a time for enjoying the cool waters of lakes and rivers and savouring the fresh flavours of the Southern Forests.

Vintage Season – Pemberton’s Wine Harvest Begins

Bunuru marks the beginning of the vintage season in Pemberton’s vineyards. The vines, after months of growth, produce their finest grapes, which are ready to be harvested for winemaking. Wineries like Silkwood Estate and Pemberley of Pemberton are buzzing with activity, and visitors can enjoy tasting freshly pressed wines or even participate in the vintage process with tours and tastings. The warm evenings make for perfect outdoor dining with a glass of Pemberton’s Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc, pairing beautifully with local summer produce.

Feijoas and Fresh Summer Produce

As the vintage gets underway, the last of the Avocado’s fill farmgate stalls and feijoas start to ripen, offering a distinctive sweet and tangy flavour that is perfect for summer desserts, chutneys, or fresh salads. Visit Pemberton’s farmers’ markets to discover the wide variety of seasonal produce, from feijoas to stone fruits and leafy greens. Incorporate these ingredients into a fresh salad, paired with local Marron or Trout, or enjoy them on their own as part of a picnic by the water.

Cool Off with Bunuru Adventures

During Bunuru’s heat, Pemberton’s cool waters provide the perfect retreat. Head to Lake Beedelup or Lake Jasper for a paddle, swim, or relaxed picnic by the shore. For those seeking adventure, Bunuru is the ideal time for a 4WD tour across the Yeagarup Dunes, offering stunning views of the coast and inland forests.

Sustainable Travel and Leave No Trace

Bunuru is also a time to reflect on the importance of sustainable travel. Visitors are encouraged to respect the land, follow Leave No Trace principles, and be mindful of the environment as they explore the pristine lakes, dunes, and vineyards.
